International Conference on Creative\Media/Technologies

Interdisciplinary Conference at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, 23-26 November, 2020

The third International Conference on Creative\Media/Technologies (IConCMT) takes place at the St. Pölten UAS from 23 to 26 November 2020 and offers exchange in several established research areas in the field of digital media technologies.

Over the course of four days, students, researchers and guests will have the opportunity to participate in presentations and discussions as well as visit demos and installations in the halls and studios of the St. Pölten UAS. For (inter)national guests and the research communities behind them, the iConCMT will be an occasion to connect with local researchers, students and companies from Lower Austria.

Covid-19 edition

In times shaped by Covid-19 restrictions, opportunities for "real-world" gatherings have become rare in the academic world. Since March 2020, most – if not all – conferences have been held online, classes have taken place online, and so have countless meetings in research projects. Despite the obvious benefits we have learned to appreciate when it comes to the facilities of Internet communication, certain "things" cannot be experienced without physical presence, especially when the home setup lacks the appropriate equipment. One such thing is the immersiveness of sound as it can be perceived in installations, concerts, or movie theatres (All Around Audio Symposium). Also, virtual reality experiences including predefined spaces and motion tracking are hardly realisable in common office rooms (XChange Reality!). In terms of shared experiences, the most essential "thing" might perhaps be the synchronicity of participants' perception as a basis for discussion and exchange.

Project Presentations

Monday, 23 November, and Tuesday, 24 November 2020

  • Mon 13:50 – 18:45, Tue 8:50 – 13:45
  • St. Pölten UAS, Large Assembly Hall
  • Contact: Alois Frotschnig | Academic Director Media Technology (BA)

In the project semester, students of the bachelor degree programme Media Technology as well as EPS students work exclusively on one project for three months. They self-responsibly implement their own ideas as a team and go through the entire project cycle, from the initial brainstorming to the development of a prototype.

In the interim presentations, they provide insights into the ongoing work as well as the first interim results, thus allowing teachers, fellow students and an interested audience to gain an impression of the diversity and professionalism of the project contributions.

All Around Audio Symposium

Wednesday, 25 November 2020

Products – Applications – Environments

(Including the annual general meeting of the Austrian section of the International Audio Engineering Society), talks, presentations & installations.

The sixth edition of the All Around Audio Symposium discusses current trends and developments from the perspectives of sound and music.

The symposium is not only addressed to industry experts but encourages researchers and designers from other fields in particular to participate in identifying new transdisciplinary intersections and fields of interest for future collaborations. It also serves as a networking opportunity.

Exhibition of semester projects Master Class Audio Design (master programme Media Production)

  • Wednesday, 25 November 2020
  • 9:00 – 18:00
  • St. Pölten UAS, Small Assembly Hall and main hall
  • Contact: Michael Iber | Lecturer and International Coordinator, Department of Media and Digital Technologies

Consortium meeting research project Mixed Reality-Based Collaboration 4 Industry - cancelled

(FFG Collective Research)

Thursday, 26 November 2020

  • 10:00 – 13:00
  • St. Pölten UAS, Large Assembly Hall
  • Contact: Thomas Moser | Head of Digital Technologies Research Group, Department of Media and Digital Technologies

Mixed Reality (Augmented and Virtual Reality – AR/VR, MR in short) offers different sectors of industry new possibilities for visualising data. Funded within the FFG programme Collective Research, about 25 business partners from different sectors contribute use cases in four thematic clusters.

The goal of the project is to create a framework for all use cases as well as prototypes for the individual use cases. This includes technically implementing and evaluating the prototypes as well as assessing their acceptance and potential impact on the working environment. In addition, existing MR hardware is assessed with regard to how well suited it is for use in industry and also made available to industrial partners during the course of the project.

Consortium meeting research project Immersive Media Lab

(FFG Coin)

Thursday, 26 November 2020

  • 10:00 – 13:00
  • virtual
  • Contact: Franziska Bruckner | Head of Media Creation Research Group, Department of Media and Digital Technologies

The Immersive Media Lab provides a platform for interdisciplinary projects in order to offer space and equipment for Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) initiatives. This will allow  for the consolidation and further development of existing knowledge on techniques and workflows, and generate new knowledge in AR/VR.

One focus of the project is on its approaches to storytelling, which can be considered an essential matter in art but also enjoys increasing importance in science. Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) offer not only future-oriented interfaces between industrial application and artistic research but also the opportunity to develop new dimensions of storytelling.

Exploring the Future of Current Challenges with Augmented and Virtual Reality

Digital collaboration, continuous innovation, and the augmentation of reality are major buzzwords of our times. As growth to infinity and beyond is often the main goal, we sometimes forget about the social and environmental impact we need to address in our projects.

XChange Reality! means DO SOMETHING! What actually has the power to change your reality? When will the future be GLAMorous again? How do we intend to create and sustain our urban and regional environment? Can Mixed Reality (XR) help us address current challenges or even find new solutions for the future? What we want to identify with you is this: what are these current challenges? What could new solutions for the future look like?

Originally planned as a "normal" conference from 27 to 30 April, the major part of the event took place online due to the restrictions related to Covid-19. However, the posters & demos session, which was not possible in April, will be carried out within the framework of the 3rd International Conference on Creative\Media/Technologies.

Graduate Consortium

Thursday, 26 November 2020

  • 14:00 – 17:30
  • Small Assembly Hall, St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences
  • Contact: Grischa Schmiedl | Deputy Academic Director Digital Media Technologies & Interactive Technologies

Within the framework of the Graduate Consortium, students of the master degree study programmes Digital Design, Digital Production, and Interactive Media present the topics of their diploma theses in the form of a poster presentation. After an introductory 30-second pitch, where the presenters can outline their ideas, there will be enough time for the visitors and students to discuss the individual topics in detail. Feedback as well as content-related advice are very welcome at this early stage of the students’ theses.

Social Programme

We have prepared a special programme for all our participants during the international week. You can choose whatever suits you best and, due to sufficient funding, your participation is free of charge. We therefore suggest that you find accommodation in St. Pölten (NOT IN VIENNA) and indicate the name of your hotel at the registration desk, so we have documentation for future funding purposes.

The special programme consists of

  • Wednesday: Conference Dinner
