Semester Start for Science Academy
“Smart World” starts its 3rd semester and is launched on location at the St. Pölten UAS – with provisions for distance learning in place, if necessary
In compliance with the currently valid hygiene measures, 19 young people from Lower Austria started their third semester of the further training programme “Smart World” in mid-September 2020 – one of the projects with which the St. Pölten UAS is involved in the Science Academy.
Motivated and Prepared
At the very beginning, all participants received IoT experimenting sets especially tailored to this semester. Christoph Braun, teaching and research assistant in the study programme Smart Engineering at the St. Pölten UAS, explains the measure: “This is to ensure that we are optimally prepared to continue classes in case of another distance learning phase. With the sets, our 19 participants can work on their experiments and projects from home at any time.”
Furthermore, the St. Pölten UAS provides ten smart home experimenting kits together with the company Loxone Electronics GmbH.
"Smart Things" in a Smart World
With suitable equipment and with the support of lecturers and researchers of the St. Pölten UAS, the new semester on the topic of “Smart Things” can now begin. The past summer semester and the recently held summer block week showed that the young scientists pursue this project with lots of commitment, curiosity and enthusiasm.
Klaus Temper, organiser of the past workshops at the St. Pölten UAS, is impressed with the young participants’ thirst for knowledge and is looking forward to the next couple of weeks.
Now what can the young scientists expect from this semester? “This edition of the Science Academy is all about the development of creative electronics projects designed to make sensor data tangible, to remotely control machines (Things) and to combine them in networks”, says Braun. Another goal is to promote the constructive exchange between the individual participants on the topic of Smart World.

Science Academy for Scientifically Interested Young People
The Science Academy NÖ offers young people from the age of 14 the opportunity to address scientific topics, to grow as individuals, and to engage in exchange with other adolescents and experts.
The St. Pölten UAS is involved in the format, e.g., with the further training programme “Smart World – Digitalisierung leicht gemacht” (digitalisation made easy). Within this framework, the young people discuss the possibilities of the digitalisation and acquire necessary competencies in technical subareas such as human-machine interaction, IoT prototype construction, Virtual Reality, and 3D printing.
