Media Technology Students of St. Pölten UAS Launch Student Section of International Audio Engineering Society
Students of the Audio Design master class of the master degree programme Digital Media Production and students of the bachelor degree programme Media Technology at the St. Pölten UAS have founded a student section of the international Audio Engineering Society (AES). The membership promotes the exchange and collaboration between members of the AES and students.
Establishing Audio Competencies
The AES is the international specialist association for practice and research on the topic of audio. Regional AES sections support the exchange between experts from this area on the one hand and the creative sector, and the industry on the other. When it comes to the AES student section at the St. Pölten UAS, the connection between teaching and the practical realm takes centre stage. The students actively participate in audio-related projects of the UAS.
“Events with guests from the production sector and the industry, access to comprehensive audio libraries and tutorials, mixing competitions and discounts on symposiums are the cornerstones for developing the students’ audio competencies and for creating personal networks”, explains Michael Iber, UAS lecturer and one of the two heads of the Audio Design master class of the master degree programme Digital Media Production.
Furthermore, the AES student section of the St. Pölten UAS brings students of the bachelor degree programme Media Technology who are interested in audio design together with the Audio Design master class. Thanks to the unique combination of sound design, music production and acoustic information design on the one hand, and sonic interaction, 3D and game audio on the other, this master class offers not only production-oriented job profiles but also perspectives in the industry, research and development.
Events of the AES student section taking place at regular intervals will offer students opportunities for international exchange. The first such occasion is the Creative Media Summer School at the St. Pölten UAS at the end of June where prospective sound designers will learn about the development of synthesised sound and tone for film and video game design within the framework of a workshop on “Procedural Audio in Animation”.
At the end of November 2019, the St. Pölten UAS will host the “All Around Audio” symposium for the fifth time. In addition, the newly founded AES section of the St. Pölten UAS will participate in the big AES Convention 2020 in Vienna next May.
Studying Audio Design
The application for the study programme Digital Media Production – the framework within which students can select the master class audio design – is not open yet. “The Audio Design master class is intended for persons wishing to deepen their expertise in the fields of sound and audio technology or to try their hand at interactive and modern audio installations. The master class is both for people with professional experience and for students with a fresh degree from a technical or music-creative study programme”, says UAS lecturer Andreas Büchele, one of Michael Iber’s colleagues
