Girls Speak the Language of the Future

St. Pölten UAS and Wien Energie Promote Female Technology Power with Student Workshop

Last week's motto for eleven female students was: Let's hit the keyboard! Wien Energie and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences hosted the "Code4Girls" together, a one-day programming workshop for technophile girls from the age of 16. Apart from a visit to the waste incinerator Spittelau, the main focus was on coding.

Digitalisation is female

"There are more and more women working in computer science and digitalisation. Our workshop aims at addressing and reinforcing this trend by showing girls and young women that programming is exciting and fun", states Kerstin Blumenstein, project head to the Creative Coding School and lecturer at the St. Pölten UAS.

Experts from Wien Energie and the St. Pölten UAS used playful approaches to familiarise the students with the complex topic of coding. In highly committed and independent teams of two, the students worked on a Lego Mindstorms robot – based on the model of a real refuse crane which they previously inspected on the premises of the waste incinerator.

Female Technicians are in demand

Coding know-how will become increasingly important in all areas of the working world, be it the industry, medicine or agriculture. Marlies Temper, Academic Director of the study programme Data Science and Business Analytics at the St. Pölten UAS: "Female technicians are desperately sought after because future innovations will just not be possible without them. Formats such as this one are therefore essential in order for women to discover their strengths and their love of programming."

As soon as in 2025, one in three or four jobs in the energy sector will require IT and data knowledge.

"Smarties Challenge"

The workshop was rounded off by a "Smarties Challenge". The winners were:

  • Laura from the BG/BRG St. Pölten
  • Sofie from the BORG Krems (both higher secondary schools).

The winning team received a tablet and internship places at Wien Energie.
