Students Present Projects at Ars Electronica

Students of the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences are going to present their projects at the Ars Electronica: the collaborative game “Mirage” for the Ars Electronica Deep Space 8K, and projects of the Master Class Audio Design.

In “Mirage – An Interactive Experience”, visitors of the Ars Electronica Deep Space 8K find themselves in a strange world where up to 16 persons can experience a story together. “The participants solve puzzles together and live through a story that appeals to several senses at once: in an abstract and seemingly surreal world, the visitors have to assemble signs and runes in teams. Together the group members have to find a secret path to a portal and evade dangers on the way”, explains UAS lecturer Matthias Husinsky who supervised the project at the St. Pölten UAS.

The game promotes group dynamics and teamwork. The participants are presented with possibilities for interaction without verbal or written explanation and are encouraged to explore them on their own. The focus is on group discovery. The interaction concept of the experience is to be intuitively comprehensible, inclusive and interculturally compatible. For example, it was an important goal of the project to optimise the visual content for people who are colour-blind.

Premiere at Ars Electronica Festival 2020

The project was developed in collaboration with the Ars Electronica Center Linz within the framework of a project semester at the St. Pölten UAS and was designed for the Deep Space 8K in Linz. The public premiere will take place at the Ars Electronica Festival 2020 on Saturday, 12 September. Subsequently, the experience will be continuously shown during regular museum hours.

“The elaborate 3D graphics and adaptive soundtrack take full advantage of the Deep Space 8K’s extraordinary possibilities, which allows the participants to plunge deeply into the experience”, describes Husinsky.

Master Class Audio Design at the Ars Electronica

A “garden of talent” under the programme item “Create Your World 2020” presents projects by young people at the Ars Electronica and invites visitors to participate. This platform for education, experiments and various future scenarios features a large number of young experts.

Among them are students of the Master Class Audio Design at the St. Pölten UAS who will present three projects online that they have developed within the framework of their study programme: the MIDI-based music adventure game “Soundescape ”, the software tool “Rumbler” which allows producers of electronic music in the genres of industrial and warehouse techno to create prefabricated rumbling sounds fast, and sound absorbers made from recycled textile waste.
