Podcast: What do deaf people need for studying?

Viktoria Kasser’s Intensive Commitment to the Topic of Gender and Diversity Earns Her the G&D Award.

How can deaf people study? "You do not get throught studies with reading alone." – Viktoria Kasser

How can a Deaf person study at the St. Pölten UAS?

In the podcast, award winner Viktoria Kasser talked about the following things in particular:

  • What more it takes for higher education institutions to improve Deaf people’s participation in courses
  • Why lip-reading cannot replace sign language interpreting
  • The fact that the Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS) is a language in its own right

To reveal the most important thing right away:

The greatest obstacle is the lack of reflected knowledge about topics affecting people with hearing impairments.

So let us begin to fill these gaps together by listening to the podcast! (in German)

Wir sehen die Arbeit von Viktoria Kasser als Auftrag an die Fachhochschule. Einige Lücken konnten wir bereits schließen, bei anderen sind wir dabei.

What we are planning for Deaf and hearing-impaired persons at the St. Pölten UAS, and what we have already done:

  • In Lecture Hall 2 (Building A), we have an audio induction loop that can be used by people with hearing impairments. The lecturer’s audio is transmitted directly to the listener’s hearing aid.
  • Deaf students can make use of ÖGS interpreting services. The UAS supports this organisationally and financially where possible.
  • A mobile microphone set for hearing-impaired persons can be borrowed from the Campus and Study Center.
  • Students can choose ÖGS (beginners and advanced) as an optional subject.
  • We are currently in the process of translating and some of our videos into ÖGS and sharing them.

We are aware that inclusion is a process rather than a one-time change.
