Ombuds Office for Students

The Ombuds Office supports students in cases where study law issues have not been satisfactorily resolved within the study programme or the university – for example, topics pertaining to repeated exam attempts, board exams, or other legal matters concerning a person’s studies. In this capacity, the Ombuds Office is impartial and not bound by instructions.

Tasks of the Ombuds Office

  • Provision of advice and direction in complex study law concerns
  • Development of options for action and guidance during the next steps
  • Mediation in conflicts in the context of studying, teaching, and exams
  • Promotion of communication between the students and their university
  • Identification of recurring problems for the continuous improvement of the study environment

The Ombuds Office CANNOT

  • issue instructions to members of the university
  • make changes to existing legal provisions (laws, regulations, statutes)
  • revoke official decisions
  • interfere in ongoing proceedings
  • represent someone in court

The Ombuds Office is not responsible for providing general support and counselling services in the context of student life (e.g., stipends, grants, housing, social services, etc.). Information on this topic is available here.

The Ombuds Office acts in an advisory and intermediary capacity, but it has no decision-making authority. It complements the existing support network of the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences and works closely with other organisational units in our institution.
